Barcelona invite Messi to attend Alba, Busquets’ last game at Camp Nou – report
Tears will be shed as Barcelona’s season comes to an end as they say goodbye to two more legends in the form of Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. Both players, part of the captaincy quadrant, are expected to leave the club at the end of the season.
They have already bid goodbye to Gerard Pique, who called quits on his playing career midway through the season.
Busquets then announced his departure even though Barcelona had tabled a one-year extension for him on Xavi’s demands. With no natural replacements in the squad, the club wanted him to continue for at least another season.
Alba followed, then, even though his contract runs until next season. The veteran had lost his place as the starting left-back to Alejandro Balde this season, and probably does not want to spend his last couple of years in top-tier football as a substitute.
Tribute ceremonies will take place for both players during the last home game of the season, when Celta Vigo visit the Camp Nou for the penultimate match of the 2022/23 campaign.
Barcelona have invited Lionel Messi for the game to attend the ceremonies according to Mundo Deportivo, as the player spent majority of his career playing alongside the two.
The Argentine also penned emotional farewell posts for the Spanish duo. “You were more than a teammate, a true accomplice on the pitch. And how nice it is to also be able to enjoy how well we get along personally,” he wrote for Alba.
As for Busquets, Leo said, “On the pitch, always with the 5, but in reality, as a player and a person, you are a 10, Busi.“
Both players are expected to start and receive a guard of honour from their teammates during the game alongside two farewell videos prepared by Barcelona.
As far as Messi’s attendance is concerned, PSG take on Strasbourg on 27th, so the Barcelona icon could, ideally, receive permission from the club to attend Barcelona’s game on 28th.
